Fossil Creek- New Years Eve 2008

Jon Morgan , John Emery & I went on another short ride. More snow & ice than I expected.

It was ~31’ when we left the trucks & ~ 34-35” when we got back.

Decide to ride the ridge , but I went too slow , packed mud on the front forks & locked up the front wheel.

JOHN EMERY & I DID A SHORT RIDE AT BIRCH CREEK FRIDAY BEFORE THE WEATHER HIT.

MOSTLY POKING AROUND & EXPLORING SIDE WASHES, BLUFFS, ETC.

IT WAS A GREAT DAY TO RIDE ! 40 DEG & NO WIND OR DUST.

FRIDAY WE MET AT THE CHEVRON AT BEACON LT & HWY55

THAD, CRAIG, BYRON (TAIL BOSS), ME, KURT & SHAWN

WE TOOK THE BACK ROADS TO LEWISTON. HIT A FEW SHOWERS ALONG THE WAY.

WE MET UP WITH AL IN COUNCIL .

WE GASSED UP IN RIGGINS (WHERE BYRON SHOWED OFF HIS WOMAN)

AND HAD LUNCH AT THE “BACK EDDY”.

BYRON THEN TOOK US THE BACK WAY INTO LEWISTON – CANFIELD ROAD, RICE CREEK,

COTTONWOOD, WOA WOA LAKE.

WE GOT MOONED BY SOME KIDS ALONG RICE CREEK, THEN WE COULD TRACE THEIR BEER CANS INTO COTTONWOOD.

SOLDIER RES * WHAWHA LAKE ON THE WAY INTO LEWISTON.

WE STAYED AT THE INN AMERICA.

THAT EVENING ONE OF LOCALS, RAY, COOKED BURGERS FOR SEVERAL OF THE RIDERS.

SATURDAY WE WERE ON THE ROAD ~ 8 AND MADE OUR WAY SOUTH ALONG THE WEST SIDE OF THE SNAKE.

SNAKE RIVER ROAD => GRAND RONDE RIVER => JOSEPH CREEK => HORSE CREEK => COLD SPRING CREEK =>

COLD SPRING RIDGE => BUCK HORN LO => ZUMWALT ROAD => JOSEPH for lunch.

AFTER LUNCH WE TOOK FS ROAD 39 INTO HELLS CANYON. WE CLIMBED A COUPLE OF NEAR 6000 FT PASSES IN A COLD DRIZZLE.

THIS OVER LOOK WAS SOCKED IN WITH DRIZZLE AND SNOW.

WE BAGGED TAKING HESS ROAD DOWN WORRIED IT WOULD BE A BIT GREASY IN THE RAIN.

SPOTS ON THE PAVEMENT WEREN’T MUCH BETTER WITH SLICK PINE NEEDLES AND LEAVES & THERE WAS ONE CATTLE GUARD IN A HIGH SPEED TURN.

WE WERE GLAD TO See DUST AGAIN WHEN WE GOT TO THE BOTTOM !

 

SATURDAY WE STAYED AT THE HELLS CANYON BED & BREAKFAST - http://hells-canyon-bed-and-breakfast.com/

THERE WERE ~ 30 RIDERS CAMPED ON THE LAWNS.

FOR $20 WE GOT CAMPING, DINNER , BREAKFAST & THE FINEST SANITATION FACILITIES.

AFTER DIINER WE WORKED ON KURT’S BLACK VELVET , PLAYED HORSE SHOES & ENJOYED THE EVENING

SUNDAY WE HEADED HOME UP THE KLEINSSCHIMDT GRADE TO CUPRUM , BEAR, COUNCIL AND RETRACED OUR ROUTE THRU INDIAN VALLEY BACK HOME.

IT WAS MUCH WARMER AND DRY !

ABOVE BEAR , IDAHO. FROM HERE WE Connected WITH FS002/ HORNET CREEK INTO COUNCIL.

IT WAS PAVED ROAD WITH SWEEPING CORNERS THAT KEPT YOUR AVERAGE SPEED ~ 70 MPH.

IDAHO CITY RACE 2008

Tim & I had breakfast at Perkins then rode the dual sports up Highway 21 to meet Bob. Bob guided us to some of the key points along the course.

Corner ~ 10 miles before the next gas check. They were absolutely ripping thru this section.
