BIRCH CREEK 5 23 10

ORIGINALLY HAD PLANNED TO RIDE LIME CREEK, BUT SATURDAYS STORM HAD US WORRIED ABOUT MUD AND SNOW. TRAFFIC CAM AT THE PINE TURN OFF LOOKED GOOD, BUT NO VIEWS OF THE MOUNTAIN.

DAVID LET ME PICK, SO WE HEADED TO BIRCH CREEK WITH THOUGHTS OF RIDING INTO SAVAGE CROSSING.

DSCF2666

DAVID NEEDED TO STRETCH HIS BACK IN MURPHY. 1ST TIME IN ~ 30 YRS THAT I READ THIS MONUMENT.

topo LOOP ~52 MILES

FOUND SOME MORE GOOD WINTER RIDING.

DAVID CLEANED THE ROCKS IN HOGPEN. I HAD TO TAKE 2 RUNS BUT STILL DID BETTER THAN LAST TIME.

WE TURNED AROUND ON THE WAY INTO SAVAGE CROSSING BECAUSE OF THE SNOW, MUD AND SLOP.

DSCF2667 Stitch

BACK TRACKED TO THE DOYLE MT TRAIL.  MADE IT TO THE TOP, BUT FOUND A SNOW DRIFT ON THE FRONT SIDE. DECIDED TO BACK TRACK THRU HOG PEN.

AS WE LOADED UP IN  THE TRAILER IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT THE MUD DID A NUMBER ON MY FORK SEALS. BOTH WERE LEAKING. THERE WAS A SHORT STRETCH WHERE THE MUD TRIED TO PACK IN BETWEEN THE  FORKS AND WHEEL ON THE WAY INTO SAVAGE CROSSING.  I HOPE LOYAL CAN TURN THEM AROUND TOMORROW !

DAVID & I WANT TO RIDE LIME CREEK ON TUESDAY. MIGHT HAVE TO RIDE THE 400.

BLACKS CREEK 5 18 10

map

topo LOOP – 60 MILES

RIDERS – JOHN C, SCOTT M, BRAD W, JOHN A

ORIGINALLY WANTED TO RIDE IDAHO CITY BUT BECAUSE OF THE WEATHER WE CHOOSE BLACKS CREEK.

THE DRIVE UP IN THE UNLOADED F450 DUALLY  WAS SOME WHAT CHALLENGING. HAD TO PUT IN 4WD TO GET UP TO 3PT ON MUDDY ROAD !

THEN IT FELT LIKE CADDY SHACK WITH THE WIND AND RAIN. ON TOP OF THAT SOME(OTHER) OLD GEEZER IN A GOVERNMENT TRUCK COMPLAINED WE WERE GOING TO TEAR THE COUNTRY UP !

TURNED OUT TO BE A GREAT RIDE !

mary's creek hike 5/15 / 10

image

YEAP, I WENT HIKING !

WAS HOPING I COULD GET CLOSER TO THE TRAIL HEAD, BUT THE ROAD LOOKED TOO ROUGH TO HAUL THE CAMPER DOWN. WE PARKED OFF THE MAIN ROAD AT MARY'S CREEK AND SET OUT CROSS COUNTRY ALONG THE CANYON RIM.

DSCF0667 Stitch DSCF0669 mary Stitch

GOT WITHIN 3/4 MILE OF THE DESCENT INTO THE CANYON AND DECIDED TO HEAD BACK.

WE HAD LOGGED 3+ MILES WHEN WE TURNED AROUND.

DECIDED TO LOOK INTO A JEEP TO TOW BEHIND THE CAMPER. A JEEP WOULD BE GREAT TO EXPLORE THE DESERT WITH THE FAMILY AND DOG. JUST NEED TO DO IT BEFORE THEY CLOSE ALL THE ROADS.

BRUNEAU DUAL SPORT 5/8/10

LOOP – 150 MILES

TRAIL BOSS – STEVE FRISBE

9 RIDERS – TOO MANY TO NAME ( LOTS OF PICS).

image

TOPO

TRAILERED THE BIKES TO BRUNEAU AND HAD BREAKFAST AT THE ONE STOP.

100_1340

STEVE HAD WARNED ABOUT THE CLIMB OUT OF INDIAN HOT SPRINGS :

“A true "dual-sport" bike recommended.
Adventure touring bikes like the KLR can do it (I have done it) but it's tough on one section of rocky "road". Make certain you have a good skid plate.
The KTM 620 (640) Adventure, KTM 525/530, XR650R, DRZ400/650, Husky TE 610 would be a much better choice than the KLR, KTM 950, or BMW anything. Sure, ride your Harley. I'd love to see it.”

I DECIDED TO TAKE THE 400EXC WITH A 1.25 GAL GAS TANK STRAPPED ON THE BACK. NEXT TIME I’LL GO AHEAD TAKE THE 640 OR MAYBE I’LL HAVE A KTM520/530.

I SHOULD OF GONE UP 1 TOOTH ON THE FRONT SPROCKET FOR THIS RIDE. IT WAS WRAPPED OUT JUST TO DO 60 MPH.

MOST WERE RIDING THE KTM 530’S, A COUPLE OF HONDA 650’S & SUPER DAVE GOMEZ WAS RIDING A VSTROM 1000 !

SUPER DAVE ROLLED THE VSTROM WITH NO PROBLEMS !

DSCF2623 Stitch

ON THE CLIMB OUT SUPER DAVE DROPPED THE VSTROM AT THE 1ST GNARLY SPOT. HE DECIDED TO TURN AROUND AND CLIMB OUT THE WAY WE CAME IN. RICK DECIDED RIDE BACK TO BRUNEAU WITH HIM. SEVERAL OF THE GUYS ESCORTED DAVE BACK TO THE TOP. SAID HE MADE IT WITH NO PROBLEMS.

BARRY- “ CLEAR CONSEQUENCES OF WALL STREET’S WREAK LESS BEHAVIOR “

WE WERE GOING TO FINISH UP WITH A FEW MILES OF SINGLE TRACK ACROSS THE DESERT, BUT WE LOST 2 RIDERS, RACHEL AND TOM. AFTER WAITING A BIT , DECIDED TO BACK TRACK IN HOPES OF FINDING THEM. DIDN’T SEE THEM ON THE TRAIL SO WE HOPPED ON HWY51 AND RODE THE PAVEMENT INTO TOWN.

GOT TO THE TRUCKS AND THEY WEREN’T THERE !  AFTER SOME TIME BRETT AND STEVE HEADED BACK OUT TO LOOK FOR THEM. THEY MET UP ON THE HIGHWAY.

TOM SAID THEY MISSED TURN ON THE SINGLE TRACK, BACK TRACKED AND MISSED ANOTHER TURN, ENDED UP ON RANCH ROADS UNTIL THEY GOT THERE BEARINGS.
