GRAND VIEW SNOW RIDE 12 /4/10

FRIDAY DAVE POSTED THEY WERE MEETING A THE Y-STOP IN GRAND VIEW AT 9AM SATURDAY.  I CHECKED THE FORECASTS. SUNDAY LOOKED BETTER-SUNSHINE , BUT SATURDAY SHOULD BE OK ~35’ WITH BRIEF SHOWER IN THE MORNING.   I PLOWED A WIDER PATH ON THE DRIVEWAY, DUG OUT THE TRUCK, GOT THE TRAILER HOOKED UP & BIKE LOADED.

SATURDAY MORNING THERE WAS A DUSTING OF SNOW AT THE HOUSE WHEN I HEADED OUT. I84 WAS WET, SIMCO HAD A LIGHT SNOW FLOOR. THERE WAS A STEADY SNOW FALL WHEN I MET DAVE, BUTCH & TOM AT THE Y-STOP.  DAVE JUST HAD A CALL FROM JEFF THAT HE HAD TO GO TO HIS DAUGHTER’S BASKETBALL GAME AND WOULD BE OUT LATER IN THE DAY. IT MUST HAVE SNOWED 1/2-1 “ WHILE WE HAD BREAKFAST.

RIDERS- DAVE, TOM, BUTCH, JOHN

TOPO

DAVE, BUTCH & TOM WERE STUDDED UP AND “A” RIDERS . SLIM CHANCE I WOULD KEEP THEM IN SIGHT.

MY CLIP OF THE 1ST FEW MINUTES OF RIDE. THE WET SNOW STUCK TO THE LENS AND GOGGLES. NOT BEING ABLE TO SEE WAS MORE OF A PROBLEM THAN NOT HAVING STUDDED TIRES.

TOM’S VIDEOS :

TOM NEEDED TO LEAVE BY 1PM SO WE LOOPED BACK TO THE TRUCKS.

WHILE WE WERE WAITING DAVE TALKED TO HIS WIFE WHO SAID IT WAS SNOWING HARD IN MOUNTAIN HOME. I CHECKED WITH MARILYN WHO SAID IT SNOWED IN BOISE AND THERE WAS STILL SNOW IN THE DRIVE.  IT WAS AFTER 2PM WHEN JEFF PULLED IN. I DECIDED I DIDN’T WANT TO GET HOME AFTER DARK AND MAYBE HAVE TO PLOW THE DRIVE TO GET THE TRUCK UP. SO I LOADED UP AND HEADED HOME.

JEFF SAID ABOUT 20 MINUTES AFTER  I LEFT THEIR RIDING PARTNER WENT DOWN IN A DITCH. THEY SPENT THE NEXT 3 HOURS GETTING HIM LOADED IN AN AMBULANCE. AT THE HOSPITAL HE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A CRACKED FEMUR  HEAD.

BLACKS CREEK 11/14/10

MAPTOPO

RIDERS- DAVID, JON, JOHN

LOOP- 35 MILES , TOO SHORT !  RODE SOME DIFFERENT TRAILS, BUT DIDN’T CLOCK ENOUGH MILES.

AS WE HEADED OUT OF TOWN ON THE FREEWAY THE RAIN WAS ROLLING IN, BUT AS WE MADE OUR WAY UP BLACKS CREEK ROAD IT CLEARED UP. JUST HAD A LIGHT MIST WHEN WE STARTED OUT.

JON PICKED THE WRONG LINE CROSSING THE CREEK. NOW HE KNOWS.

AT THE BEGINNING OF DEVIL’S HOLE, I WAS POKING ALONG THE TRAIL WHERE IT IS WIDE ENOUGH FOR MY TRUCK. I MANAGED TO CLIP A STUMP AND FLIP OFF THE TRAIL.

I WAS HANGING UPSIDE DOWN OVER THE CREEK WITH MY FOOT STUCK UNDER THE BIKE. AFTER I GOT UNTANGLED, I TRIED A COUPLE OF TIMES TO PULL THE BIKE UP ON THE TRAIL. DECIDED I NEEDED TO GO DOWN THRU THE CREEK. SHOULD HAVE BEEN EASY, BUT THE FRONT WHEEL PINNED AGAINST A LOG WITH THE BACK WHEEL STILL ON TOP OF THE BANK. WHEN I GOT THE BIKE OVER THE LOG IT WAS POINTED THE WRONG WAY. AFTER I GOT IT TURNED AROUND IT WAS EASY TO RIDE OUT.

I MET DAVID AND JON ,WHO WERE HEADED BACK TO LOOK FOR ME JUST PAST THE NARROW SPOTS.

THE ROCK, THE HOLE , THE LOG

TRAIL 316

DAVID  WANTED TO  SCOUT THE ROCK TO SEE IF YOU COULD RIDE ABOVE THE NOTCH. YOU CAN’T.

ON THE WILLOW CREEK CROSSING I DRIFTED TO FAR TO THE RIGHT(NEVER NEW YOU COULD) AND CASED IN A RUT.

MY MOMMA TOLD IF WE WOULD CARRY SAWS WE WOULDN’T HAVE SO MUCH HEAVY LIFTING.

DSCF2574

GORDON AND DAVID, LUNCH AT OUR NEW FAVORITE SPOT. I STILL MIGHT TAKE YOU THERE.

WHICH WAY DID DAVID GO ?

DAVID SAID WE WOULD GO THE SAME WAY BACK, BUT SKIP THE STEEP STUFF. I WAS  THINKING OF THE OTHER STEP STUFF. THEY WEREN’T AT ANY JUNCTIONS (IF I GOT ONE OF THOSE NEW 6 SPEED KTMS WOULD I BE FASTER ?), NO DUST AND I KEPT SEEING SCRATCH MARKS, BUT IT MUST HAVE BEEN FROM  MONDAY.

WILLOW CREEK

I THOUGHT I WOULD TRY THE CREEK BED INSTEAD OF THE COBBY SIDE HILL. BAD IDEA, THE CREEK BED IS MORE COBBY PLUS THERE IS A TREE DOWN. GORDON HAD TO RECUSE ME.

SUNDAY WAS MARILYN'S BIRTHDAY !

GREAT DAY !  STILL WARM, ONE OF THOSE DAYS- TOO COOL WITH OUT A JACKET, TOO WARM WITH IT.

WENT BACK TO ETCH IN “I84”, BUT GOT “LOST” ON THE WAY BACK IN DITTO FLATS !

THE MOST MOTORCYCLES I’VE SEEN OUT THERE, 10-12 !  THE HUNTERS ARE STARTING TO THIN OUT.

WE BOTH AGREED WE SHOULD OF SET UP CAMP ON THURSDAY.
