RIDERS – DAVID , JOHN

LOOP ~ 50 MILES

LAST WEEK BEFORE THE DANSKINS CLOSE FOR THE SEASON. IT WAS DRY YEAR , NO SNOW SEVERAL PEOPLE STILL HAVE BEEN RIDING THE MOUNTAINS THE LAST MONTH. DAVID WANTED TO GIVE BLACKS CREEK ONE MORE RIDE.

IT WAS IN THE TEENS WHEN WE LEFT TOWN. THE SUN WAS OUT AND NO WIND WHEN WE PARKED AT THREE PT.

THERE WAS LESS SNOW THAN A MONTH AGO BUT THE GROUND WAS FROZEN .

MOST ALL THE WATER CROSSING WERE FROZEN SOLID. THERE WERE ALSO FROZEN PUDDLES IN COVERED WITH DIRT –BROWN ICE. THE FROZEN GROUND WITH DRY SLICK WAS ALMOST AS SLICK AS THE ICE. I WAS RIDING ON NEW KNOBBIES WITH 15PSI, THAT DIDN’T HELP. MISSED MY TRIALS TIRE ALREADY.

A FEW OF THE CREEK CROSSINGS.

DAVID MADE A FIRE FOR OUR LUNCH BREAK. AFTERWARDS WE HEADED BACK PAST THE WATER FALL. TOOK THE 1ST TRAIL OUT OF WILLOW CREEK. IT HAS A TECHNICAL CLIMB RIGHT OFF THE BOTTOM WITH 2 LINES- UP OVER A ROOTED ROCK FACE OR A SIDE TRAIL THRU A NOTCHED CHUTE IN THE ROCK. DAVID WENT UP THE ROCK FACE, I CHOOSE THE CHUTE. GOT ALMOST THRU IT- KILLED THE ENGINE , SLIDE BACKWARDS AND HI-SIDED. AFTER ANOTHER TRY I AHD DAVID RIDE MY BIKE THROUGH IT. I WAS SPENT THE REST OF THE RIDE OUT.

MURRAY AND KAT SHOWED UP JUST AS WE WERE ABOUT TO RIDE OUT. MURRAY SAID HE WAS GOING TO DO A SIMPLE RIDE BECAUSE HIS FEET HAVE BEEN BOTHERING HIM.

ANOTHER VIEW OF SINKER CREEK CANYON. SINGLE TRACK OPPORTUNITIES ARE LIMITED THESE DAYS.

DAVID OPENED THE LAST GATE ON THE WAY BACK TO THE TRUCK AND WAVED ME THRU. ABOUT A MILE FROM THE SAND WASH ON A SMALL FEEDER,I JUST SHIFTED TO 3RD OR 4TH, SOME HOW LOST THE FRONT WHEEL. IN SLO MO I SAW MYSELF LANDING ON THE HANDEL BARS- ‘ DAMN THIS GOING TO HURT’.  HAD TO SIT THERE TO DO AN INVENTORY OF ALL THE INJURIES. THE RIBS SEEMED OK, DIDN’T LOOSE MY BREATH, THE CHEST PROTECTOR SAVED ME .

DAVID ROLLED UP. I HAD HIM PICK UP MY BIKE, STILL WAITING FOR THE BIG STING TO ARRIVE.

RODE THE LAST MILE WITHOUT ANY DISCOMFORT.  GOD LOVES SPODEDADDY TOO !

BACK AT THE SAND WASH WE RAN INTO ROCKY. WAS HIS 1ST RIDE SINCE HIS HEART ATTACK.

SINKER CANYON

WE RODE BACK UP THE SLOT AND ROCK LEDGES. I’M RUSTY – WILL TAKE ANOTHER RUN AT IT NEXT SUNDAY.

WE MADE OUR WAY OVER TO DIAMOND BASIN. DECIDED TO RIDE UP THE “STEEP” TRAIL. IT’S BEEN REROUTED AND NOW IS THE “EASY” TRAIL.  BILL DART DID A GOOD JOB ON THIS. CLAIMS HE DIDN’T CLOSE ANY OF SINGLE TRACKS OFF OF THE MAIN WASH BEHIND MURPHY, BUT KNOWS WHO DID IT.

MURPHY

IF ANYONE ASKS WE STUCK TO THE OFFICIAL BLM TRAILS.

THERE WAS A BIT OF AN INVERSION AS WE DROVE IN, BUT THE WIND SEEMED TO CLEAR IT OUT FROM THE OWYHEE FRONT. SURPRISINGLY THERE WEREN’T ANY BIKES AT RABBIT CREEK OR THE MURPHY SAND WASH.

LOOKED TO BE CLUB OF ARTIC CAT UTV’S AS WE PARKED.

AS WE WERE GETTING READY A TRUCK WITH 3 BIKES PULLED UP.

BEAUTIFUL DAY !

THE SLOT

RIDE INTO SINKER CREEK

ONE OF FEW BITS OF SINGLE TRACK IN MURPHY.

SO WE RODE DOWN THE CREEK TO RIDE IT BACK OUT.

IT TOOK ME 3 TRIES TO CLIMB OVER THE LEDGE. IT’S AN EASY STEP UP , I JUST FLUBBED IT.

ON THE 1ST TRY THE ENGINE DIED WHEN I CHOPPED THE THROTTLE.

THE 2ND RUN JUST NOT ENOUGH MO.

THE 3RD TRY I HAD ENOUGH & KEPT A STEADY THROTTLE THRU THE CREEK.

FUN DAY . FIRST DESERT RIDE SINCE APRIL. GOT TO STRETCH OUT THE 250 ALL THE WAY TO 6TH GEAR IN A COUPLE OF SPOTS. EVEN THOUGH I WAS RIDING FASTER DAVE WOULD STILL SNEAK AWAY FROM ME, SO MUCH FOR SPEED DISTRIBUTION.
